Master the basics and tow with ease
If you are thinking about taking a caravanning holiday but have never towed before, don't worry. Towing can seem daunting if you are new to it, but there are just a few simple things to remember before you set off and you will be amazed at the places your RV and your imagination can take you.
If you're not in the market for a new 4WD, you can most likely still tow a caravan or camper trailer with the vehicle you already have.

However, if you are looking to buy a new car, there are a few things to look for. The most important thing is that you are comfortable in the car as you will be driving for long distances and in various weather conditions. Therefore the more adjustable features the car has, the better suited it will be. For example, many cars have adjustable steering wheel columns, adjustable lumbar support in the seats and some even have adjustable foot pedals. Other important features are air bags and ABS brakes to protect you and your family.

In regards to the tow bar or hitch, there are two main types. For example, a 2004 V6 or V8 Holden Berlina (Auto) with a standard hitch/Class 1 is able to tow a maximum weight of 1250 kgs/125kg (ball weight), however, when the same vehicle is fitted with a Heavy Duty or Class 2 hitch it is able to tow 2100 kgs/210kgs (ball weight). The owner's handbook must be referred to for additional vehicle fittings when towing. When towing, ensure that you have the correct type of hitch suited to what you are towing or importantly the weight you are towing. This isn't difficult however it is important so please seek professional advice.

With fuel prices on the rise, fuel economy is often foremost in many travellers' minds. Actually, when you add up all the expenses for a trip, the total fuel cost is a lot smaller expense then many may first think. While it is important when buying a new car to look for a fuel economic option, it is not the most important part of the holiday. To ensure you are not using excess fuel, make sure your tyres are at the correct pressure and your travelling speed is between 80-90km/h. These small tips go a long way to reduce your fuel expense.

If you need more information on a new car's maximum towing capabilities speak to your car dealer, or if you are looking to tow with your current vehicle, call the Customer Support Line of the manufacturer.
However, the most important thing to remember is to relax and enjoy the freedom that comes with taking to the open road. As long as you have sought sound advice from the experts, you will be able to look ahead to the natural wonders that await you and not be worried about what is behind you.
